Australian Tumbleweed Awards 2011 – Worst Contribution to Radio Comedy

Over the years we have resigned ourselves to the fact that the comedic aspirations of commercial radio stations extend no further than idiotic yammering and prank calls.... Read More »

The Better Project

We're big fans of Tony Martin, Ed Kavalee and Get This 'round here, so it pains us to admit that we've been a bit disappointed by The Joy of Sets. The first episode was a good start, but things have been patchy since then, and the ratings dip that led Channel 9 to bump the show to 10.30pm seems to indicate that we're not the only ones who've been a little underwhelmed by the series. But hey, at least it's still on... Read More »

The Ideas Shower overfloweth

Truly the Sweetest Plum

It was a pleasant surprise towards the end of last year to see Triple M hire Nick Maxwell and Declan Fay to bring their excellent podcast The Sweetest Plum to radio. Now Maxwell and Fay are doing the drive time shift in Sydney every Monday to Thursday (with Roy & HG on Fridays), and in Melbourne on Fridays (although this appears to be a best-of of the Sydney shows). Late Arrivals at the Comedy Boom

You probably saw the story in the Herald Sun the other day that Hamish & Andy are “close” to finalising a deal with Nine. This came as a bit of a surprise to those of us who expected them to sign with Ten (who screened their radio spin-off TV shows), but apparently what swung it was that Hamish & Andy “like that Nine is backing comedy”. And who can blame them? 2011 looks like being one hell of a year of comedy on... Read More »

Vale TV Burp

So farewell then TV Burp, the bought-in British format that could have worked. Some have argued that TV Burp wasn’t good enough to care about but, while it wasn’t the funniest thing ever, it was getting better. It certainly got more praise than its partner show Double Take (admittedly, not difficult), hence Seven swapping the... Read More »

Molloy improves Hughesy & Kate non shocker

Mick Molloy is currently filling in for Kate Langbroek on the ludicrously popular Hughesy & Kate whilst Langbroek is on maternity leave. This comes only a few months after Molloy filled in for Dave Hughes when he became a father at the end of April. Like both Langbroek and Hughes, Molloy is a commercial radio veteran who knows the score when it comes to breakfast radio, but with one vital difference: he's... Read More »

The 9pm Project

One of the rarely mentioned but screamingly obvious factors behind the success of most of the ABC’s local comedy ventures over the last few years is the... Read More »
